WAITING FOR THE OPERA – L’OPERA IN MOSTRA
THE HISTORICAL ARCHIVES OF THE FONDAZIONE ARENA DI VERONA ON SHOW
Verona’s prestigious Palazzo della Gran Guardia hosts an exhibition that makes opera at the Arena di Verona even more magic and exciting. With a corpus of over 140 works, all from the Fondazione Arena di Verona Historical Archives, Waiting for the Opera – L’Opera in mostra reveals the Arena via its Archives, documenting the story of the Arena Opera Festival from its birth in 1913 to the present day.
Proposed by the Fondazione Arena di Verona as a complement to the operatic experience, the exhibition shows sketches, costumes, costume designs, period photographs, audio and video recordings, exhibited in five thematic sections, one for each of the operas on this year’s Arena di Verona Opera Festival program:
AIDA - TOSCA - IL TROVATORE - LA TRAVIATA - CARMEN
Located in Verona's main square, a short distance from its magnificent Roman Amphitheatre, which every year is transformed into the world’s largest open-air opera theatre, the exhibition celebrates the Arena Opera Festival by means of the work of great performers, famous directors, high profile scenographers and multiple award-winning costume designers: from Maria Callas to Franco Zeffirelli, Pino Casarini to Gabriella Pescucci. A compulsory stop for all those who come to Verona to attend the Opera Festival, but also those wanting to discover a fascinating world of music, colours, designs, fabrics, acting, lighting and artists.
On performance days at the Arena di Verona, exhibition visiting hours are extended to 8:30 pm an unmissable opportunity to prepare for the magic of the show just before entering the shrine of open-air opera.
